Welcome, Dr. Carah Santos!
Allergy & Asthma Associates of Maine is pleased to announce a new addition to its team, Dr. Carah Santos, who specializes in Allergy & Immunology. Dr. Santos is a native of Northern California, and after completing her undergraduate studies at Columbia University, she received her medical degree from Penn State College of Medicine. She returned to California to perform her residency in Pediatrics at Stanford University's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. She recently completed her Allergy & Immunology fellowship training at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado, the leading respiratory hospital in the nation. She treats patients of all ages and has particular interest in food allergy, asthma, and immunodeficiency.
Dr. Santos chose to specialize in Allergy & Immunology because the conditions she treats are very common and their management emphasizes improving quality of life. Dr. Santos favors a team-based approach to patient care and strives to work jointly with patients, families, caregivers and the community to provide the education and treatment plan that best suits each individual patient. She carries a philosophy of involving her patients in each step of the decision making process and ensuring that they have a solid understanding of their medical conditions.
Dr. Santos is excited to begin her new life in Portland with her fiance, who is also a physician in the community. She looks forward to the hiking, skiing, sailing, arts, and great cuisine Maine has to offer.

Allergy & Asthma Associates of Maine and the MMC Research Institute Studying Effects of Bathing on Children’s Eczema
Does bathing impact a child’s eczema? That’s a question Dr. Ivan Cardona and Dr. Erin Kempe, from Allergy & Asthma Associates of Maine and the MMC Research Institute, are asking. A team led by Erin Kempe, DO, and Ivan Cardona, MD, is conducting a clinical research study to understand the best method of treatment for atopic dermatitis with regard to frequency and duration of bathing.
Participants will be provided free moisturizers and cleansers, as well as individualized treatment information on the best way to treat eczema.
The study is accepting participants who meet the following eligibility requirements:
· Between the ages of 6 months and 11 years
· Diagnosed with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis
· Must have parental consent
The study will take place over the course of a month, consisting of four office visits ranging from 1 to 2 hours in length. These office visits could occur at any of our four locations: Portland (195 Fore River Pkwy # 410), Intermed (259 Main Street, Yarmouth), Augusta (60 Industrial Dr.), or Kennebec (7 Shape Dr., The Medical Group) offices.
Participants in the study must arrange for their own transportation.
